"God's GIFs are gay!" proclaimed angry atheist, who was promptly banned from Reddit for blasphemy. Yes, the infamous Reddit forum that was originally designed to elicit internet reactions for their users had a long list of prohibitions that banned people from posting anything with "Christian or religious" content in it. This was not an easy restriction to enforce; in fact, you would be hard-pressed to find even one Reddit post with "Christian or religious" content on it (unless you go digging through deleted posts). However, as Reddit grew exponentially in popularity, they had to modify some of the rules to accommodate for more new users who were joining Reddit. A small minority of those users joined simply for some good old fashion trolling and drama. The most common kind of trolling is to post or comment with something that will intentionally offend or come across as controversial. So it was only assumed that after years of dealing with trolls, the administrators decided to simplify their guidelines by banning all "controversial" topics, which included any content related to religion, politics, and other topics that are associated with drama or are controversial in nature. So what does an atheist have to do with all this? Well, atheists are known for being outspoken about their beliefs. Therefore, they are often the type of people who want to express their opinions on controversial subjects, despite the fact that most Reddit users are not atheists. This led to an increasing number of users joining Reddit just to post comments that would be suppressed on other forums for being too controversial. Eventually, it got so bad that Reddit started banning prolific atheist who was posting anti-religious comments regularly. However, this did not deter the atheist from being outspoken about their beliefs. On June 22nd 2014, Reddit banned all of their most vocal anti-religious users—including one user named GifsGayGore. Without warning, this user had his account terminated with no prior notice or warning at all. This left Reddit users confused and outraged, who then demanded answers from Reddit administrators. User :GifsGayGore was a prominent user on the /r/gifs subreddit. Although his most common posting activity was nsfw (NSFW stands for Not Safe For Work. It means that the content in question is unsuitable to be shown in most workplaces), he also posted some religious/anti-religious comments on occasion, but these were few and far between. He was banned for posting "Christian or Religious" content despite having never posted anything like that before. The few comments/posts he had written were either neutral or even anti-religious (for example, this comment). The question on Reddit was eventually answered by an admin on June 29th 2014. They released an official reply to the user's question on /r/gifs . The reply topic was titled "GifsGayGore" and began with the following sentence: User :GifsGayGore, your account has been banned for posting "anti-religious" comments. First of all, thanks for being awesome. We love awesome people here at Reddit. The admin then stated that user :GifsGayGore had been banned for "harming or upsetting" other users by expressing his opinions about religion, politics, etc.. He explained that these posts violated website rules against harassment and personal attacks . cfa1e77820
